Fortis | Snugpak SJ9 Collab
Snugpak SJ9 Fortis edition.
‘The leading British sleeping bag manufacturer has built upon the success of its best known insulated jacket, the Softie, to bring an inspired new innovation to its clothing collection. The new generation of insulated jackets from Snugpak are British made in the company’s factory in West Yorkshire, and are manufactured using its exclusive Softie Premier insulation. This version builds upon Fortis’s growing carp scene following and uses a traditional DPM colourway for an exclusive collaboration.’
I’ve always preferred military grade clothing for use while fishing as I feel that it is often built to a different level in terms of endurance and quality. As anglers we are not really facing extreme conditions, however we do need something that can keep us comfortable for long periods of relative inactivity on the bank.
The best way to describe this jacket is like wearing a sleeping bag. It is a very cosy fit, perfect for the cold winter days or the spring mornings and the quality of material, detailing and ‘build’ is superb. One thing that particularly impresses me is the jacket’s ability for heat retention, when you take it off you can literally still feel the heat in the jacket which is down to the already proven and renowned Snugpak Softie filling. It comes in a nice classic DPM pattern which is very popular again at the moment; and a nice ode to the Richie Mac days of old… The hood is nice and fitted too which great for keeping the chill off of your neck and face if done up right to the top. All in all it is a superb jacket, and a completely different quality from most other angling clothing out there.
It packs down nice and small and comes with its own dedicated stuff sack, it’s lightweight and you don’t feel like a Michelin man like you would with some puffer type jackets. Whether you’re sat in a low chair chasing bessies or taking the crisp chill out of first light, this is a very functional jacket and comes highly recommended. I would suggest possibly getting a size up from what you might usually wear, as like me you will probably wear a few layers underneath and the snug fit is designed to aid heat retention.
This is what Snugpak say about the SJ9 themselves
‘This is our latest development in all-weather jackets with a brand new design for 2015, designed to give you the perfect outer shell whatever conditions you’re facing throughout the year. The jackets in the range benefit from our high tech Paratex Steelplate outer and Paratex Light inner, keeping any moisture away from your skin, so you stay warm, comfortable and dry. And our Softie Premier filling reflects and traps heat for reliable dryness, warmth and comfort, every time you wear it. The new design is tailored to fit the contours of your body, with a water resistant main zip, and a high neck design that keeps out the draughts. The Softie Jacket 9 is designed for the winter months with a permanent, adjustable, insulated hood for extra warmth around the head, neck and face. You’ll be comfortable right down to -10°c.’
